The Do Gooder

When was the last time you physically DID something
to brighten someone else's day?

I'm not talking about just giving a compliment in passing.

I mean a time where you actually helped someone out of a bind.
Baked someone something just to be nice.
Became a listening ear.
A shoulder to lean on.
Offered up an extra set of hands to get a job done.
Sent someone a little note just to say hi.

Without being provoked, pushed or paid to do it?
Without putting a second thought into it.
Without moaning about how much time it may take?

Now, when was the last time someone did something nice for you?
Didn't it make you feel amazing?
Maybe it even put a perma-grin on your face?
Brought tears to your eyes?

I am SO blessed to have
some of these people in my life.
A select few
that go out of their way
all the time
to brighten my day.

They are a real-life inspiration to me.
I didn't have to look far to find them.
They are there every day, without a grumble,
without being the least bit self-centered.

They aren't materialistic, or fake.
What they do comes genuinely from the heart.
I love my Do Gooder's and all that they do to make me smile....

The little notes and drawings my Hubby leaves in the morning
for me and the Mads to wake up to
before he heads out to work.
And of course EVERYTHING else he un-selfishly does for us.
He anchors our life down.
And does it without complaint and always with a smile on his face.

The daily call I get from my mom
where she listens to me vent about life,
and gives advice for 30 minutes.
All of this before I let her chime in with the REAL reason for her call.

The funny little gifts my mother-in-law
goes out of her way to bring me.
They would be meaningless to some, but to me they rock my world.

The way my Dad always seems to know just when I need a break.
When I need to get out of the house for a bite to eat
and some good conversation.
How he knows just how to make me laugh.

The offers from my in-laws and parents
to take the little Punkin, on their days off.
Days they could be out doing something for themselves.
Just so I can have some "me" time.

And then there are my Barn Fairies {as I affectionately call them}.
The friends that pop in and out of my yard
without me knowing.
They go about their business cleaning stalls,
putting the barn back in order.
Going out of their way to do little odd jobs that
they don't have to do.

These people have no idea how much they have affected my life.
How grateful I am for them.
How I wish I could follow in their footsteps
and make someone else half as happy as they have made me.

These little gestures may seem so small and insignificant to others,
but they are the little things that make my world go 'round.
Without them my life would be at a stand still
I wouldn't know which way to turn or what to do next.
They are the glue that mentally and physically holds me together.

In honor of my Do Gooder Peeps,
I am making it my goal this week to make at least 2 people smile.
Make them as happy as the Do-Gooders have made me.

And I'd like you guys to join me! Are you up for it?

I'd love to hear how you brought a little sunshine to someone's life.

It is nothing major and I debated commenting because I feel like I might be considered arrogant for helping. I ran into Walgreen's the other night and as I was going in an elderly woman was coming out. Her scooter thing got caught in the middle of the closing doors because the back tires wouldn't make it over the little hump. I asked if she needed help and she said her battery must be running low. I pushed her along and got her to her car. She thanked me profusely and all I could say was you're welcome. This was because I hope that if I needed help someone would be there! There were several other people in ear shot before I walked up but were ignoring her. So sad when you can't even bother to take 2 minutes to help someone that clearly needs it!

I thought of another instance...I am doing GREAT at this helping thing lately. :oP My really good friend that lives in my neighborhood has triplet boys. Well, they ALL got ear infections and colds at the same time. Think that is hard?!?!? The day she took them to the pediatrician she had to call her SIL to come over. Why you ask...because her husband was in pain and they ended up doing an appendectomy at around 3 am. I called her the next morning and just said that I WAS bringing a meal for them. I didn't give her a choice because most people would say don't worry we're fine. She has raved for the past 2 weeks how good the meal was and how much it helped. When you know someone needs help it is sometimes best to just say you ARE doing it and not give them the option of backing out because they don't want to impose. I also told her that I always try to think about what I would do if I needed help and that I treat people the way I want to be treated.
