I Heart Electricity

Remember that little bit of snow I wrote about in my last post?

The windshield of my car on the 27th

Yup. An inch and a half of snow. And we thought that was absurd for October.

Well, just two days later on October 29th came SNOWTOBER:

19" of snow. Yes, NINETEEN!
Pretty while it was falling
Poor Truck :(

I'm sure by now, if you watch the news, you've heard that the Northeast was pummeled by a freak October snow storm. Heavy, wet snow stuck to the leaves that hadn't yet fallen from the trees, causing them to snap and crack under the weight. Power lines were torn down, transformers blew, and power was knocked out to over a million people. Lucky us, we were right in the middle of it.

Starting her early. Maddy's Snow Removal Service :)
Just 12 hours before we were swinging on this.
With all the weight from the snow branches were hitting the ground.

For last 4 days we have patiently sat by listening to the hum of our generator. Watching as town after town canceled school for the first, second and third snow days of the year. Cleaning up the debris left in our yard. Travelling to my Dads house two towns away for water for us and the animals on a daily basis, as well as sneaking in the occasional shower. Waiting in line at the gas station (one of the few that is open) to fill gas tanks for the generator. Travelling to near-by towns trying to find a grocery store that has power and is carrying milk. Trying to eat up all the perishables that we couldn't fit into snow packed coolers. And crossing our fingers that the power would come back on, sooner rather than later. Yes, we still had some fun too. With all this snow how could you NOT play outside, have a snowball fight and make a snowman?
Gotta try and make the best of it!

Spirit wasn't thrilled the snow was up to his knees.
First snow man of the year! BEFORE Halloween.
With a wine cork mouth and tequila cork nose....oops!
Kisses for her new buddy.

Then, last night we got our wish for power.
I have never been so happy to hear my washing machine! Let alone turn on a faucet and actually have water come out. You don't realize how often during the day you use your water until you lose it. All weekend I found myself walking to the sink only to be reminded that Nope! So sorry, no water.

Can I just say that as much as I hate paying the bill each month - I LOVE ELECTRICITY!
If I could I'd kiss it.

Yet, there are still thousands without power tonight, and hundreds that have had to deal with worse aftermath from the storm than I could ever imagine. So I ask you to please keep all of these people in your thoughts tonight as you surf the web, or curl up on the couch with your loved ones to catch some TV before bed. There are some people out there tonight that have been displaced from their homes, that don't have heat, hot water, or that completely lost their house or even a loved one due to the storm. My thoughts and prayers are heading out to all of you that may need them.

A perfect blanket of snow is such a beautiful sight, but also a great reminder of how destructive Mother Nature can be. Even though we are used to getting storms of this caliber in our area (minus the power outages!), I really hope that this isn't how the rest of our winter is going to unfold.
One monster storm is enough for me!

I just love snow, it's beautiful. You are so right though it can definitely be very destructive. Sorry to hear that so many are suffering from this monster storm. Prayers are with them. I'm like you, I hope this isn't an indication of how the rest of winter is going to go.

Katie we have found that the secret to living in town is a generator hooked into the panel and a wood stove for heat. We can use everything but the dryer and stove.

And to think, it's been in the 80s here in southern AZ... Nuts, right!?! Two years ago, where I grew up, we were snowed in without power for three days. It was awful... I can only imagine how hard it is for those that have been without for much longer. Glad yours is back on! And seems like you made the best of it!

Wow, so pretty!! My gosh girl you were not kidding when you said you were having weather and electricity issues. Thank you for sharing these photos, coming from Hawaii, I have NO CLUE about what goes on in the rest of the world. Hahaha! I don't get out much, don't watch the news and have only been off this island a handful of times mostly when I was little. :) oh and, you have a horse?! Way cool!

Found your blog through the Thursday Hop around! Love the snow pics!! We didn't get quite 19" here, but it was definitely interesting as I was in a wedding on Saturday during the snow... and let's just say I didn't plan my outfit thinking that there would be snow!
